Evidence Center

This is where we post evidence-based practice resources for download.

The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model and Guidelines tells us that evidence-based practice is

A problem solving approach to clinical decision making…that integrates the best available scientific evidence with the best available experiential evidence

The original article about evidence-based practice from 1996 adds patient values and preferences as the third element of the model.

We understand that, for busy professional nurses, seeking the relevant scientific evidence is the most challenging element of developing evidence-based policies, procedures, teaching plans, lectures, and other materials related to clinical practice. This Evidence Center provides lists of relevant literature and slides and additional materials from ExpoEd lectures at the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses National Teaching Institute (NTI).

Also check out the responses to Ask the Expert; each answer is evidence-based and provides literature targeted to specific topics such as chest tube dressings, whether to use suction, when to clamp a chest tube, assessing bubbling and tidalling, and other clinical dilemmas. Simply use the search box in the sidebar if you need information about a specific topic.
